Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth, allowing a reconstituted solution to be drawn from the same vial multiple times over several weeks in laboratory settings. It is the standard reconstitution vehicle for lyophilized research peptides.
Bacteriostatic Water for Injection (BWFI) is USP-grade sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of most common bacteria, which allows a single vial of reconstituted solution to be accessed repeatedly over an extended period — typically up to 28 days when refrigerated — without microbial contamination. In peptide research, it is the standard vehicle for reconstituting lyophilized (freeze-dried) compounds prior to laboratory use.
